How to Kickstart Your Personal Development this New Year by Abbie Boorman

In comes the New Year, and with it the setting of aims and goals: the pursuit of a fulfilling and successful year. While the cliché “new year, new me” can be unrealistic, here are some of the things our team are doing to help kickstart personal development at the beginning of the new year.

Documenting a 30-day challenge could be a way to aid your personal development.  While these sorts of personal challenges are popular in the social media industry, you don’t have to be a vlogger to complete a trial like this. You could start small; by using each day to reach out to someone that you have perhaps fallen out of touch with, or even a family member you haven’t spoken to for a while.

Another challenge could be to keep a gratitude list, or penning just a single positive thought each day. Positivity challenges such as these have been scientifically proven to improve not only mental health but physical well-being, too, with positive people experiencing a decrease in aches and pains.

Get a helping hand from the likes of Five Minutes in the Morning: A Focus Journal to remind you of the positive things we have. A healthier and happier you is a great first step towards a more productive 2018.

Organising your time, your personal space and belongings will bring balance into your weeks like never before, allowing you to make the most of your time and maximise productivity. Using January to organise the year ahead will give you more focus, helping you to get things done in a shorter amount of time while making sure that you have more time to spend on what is important to you and your personal development.

Get the ball rolling by organising the things you use every day of the week. We suggested using a product like the Knomad Organiser for storing everything in one place, so that it doesn’t matter whether you’re in an airport lounge, between meetings at a coffee shop or simply at the office – you’re always confident and in charge of your belongings.

With 10” organisers and 13” laptop Knomads available in a variety of colours and materials, find a your perfect Knomad here.

If you’re looking for a habit change or a larger move, signing up for a new class or learning a new skill will inspire you and push you out of your comfort zone. Learning something new could ignite a new passion within you while encouraging and inspiring your creativity.  Seeking new experiences is proven to help your sense of accomplishment and pride, boosting your confidence which is helpful both in and out of the office. Learning a new skill will also help your routine planning (i.e. “on Tuesday evenings I have my travel journalism class”) – adding a new feature to your schedule will help your holistic learning and keep you inspired through your other responsibilities.

If you would rather learn remotely than in-class, check out a learning platform like Udemy, and choose from 55,000 online courses to complete in your own time.

There are a huge number of ways to help smaller charities or community groups that go on to make a big difference. Volunteering in and around your community can be personally rewarding for you and help to make real positive social change. When we have constant positive interactions, we improve mental and physical health by optimising social brain function – but best of all, your community and social network will be strengthened, and you’ll have the chance to make new friendships and connections.

Your world should not revolve around a 9-5. We have so many options available to do more with our time and energy, to develop our minds and bodies and even help other people along the way. Look at the time you have available (is it evenings? Is it mornings? Weekends?) and think what you could achieve in those moments – that’s how the road to personal and professional freedom starts.

Let us know what you’re going to do differently, and when you’re going to do it. If you’ll be travelling more, check out our full range of bags and accessories here.
