If you have been keeping up to date with our socials, you will have seen our new mustard colour range that has been added to the Thames collection.
Packed full of pockets, our Thames collection is now produced using 100% recycled plastic bottles (PET). The material created provides the same strength and durability of our former fabric and offers great eco-friendly alternative. Each backpack in the collection is made using the equivalent of 8 x 2 litre water bottles. The mustard range alone saved over 3,600 bottles from going to landfill or ending up in our oceans.
The bottles are broken down through a process of hydrolysis, in which water is added to reduce the compound to its original state where it can be repurposed into a variety of new materials. In this instance, it is manufactured into thread, which is then used to create our fabric. Recycling PET in this way breathes a lease of life into single-use plastics, and has a much lower carbon emission than the manufacturing process of virgin PET has much higher carbon emission that that of recycled, reducing pollution, improving our carbon footprint, and preserving raw materials.
In landfill, a plastic bottle can take up to 1000 years to begin the process of breaking down. The compounds used during manufacture mean that it does not decompose as such, but breaks down into micro-plastics that leak chemicals into the soil, causing degradation and potential contamination of local water supplies. Due to the inability of plastic to decompose, it means that every plastic item that has ever been manufactured still exists on the planet today.
